<p>It’s recommended that men should stop at four drinks in one night and women at three. Once you’ve reached your limit, switch to water or grab a snack instead. Talk to a doctor or nurse if you are having a hard time cutting down on your drinking. <p>And that it is a setup for failure based on the assumption that drinking problems always progress and inevitably gets worse. According to this view, lifelong abstinence is the one and only way to deal successfully with a drinking problem. There is no guaranteed “safe” level of drinking that will cause no harm.</p>
<h2 id="toc-1">Women Should Drink Less Alcohol Than Men</h2>
<p>Though you may not have experienced any legal problems resulting from your drinking, you may have had some close calls. Legal consequences often affect future opportunities such as employment, admittance to academic  programs, or studying abroad. In the beginning stages of drinking, the experience and effect can be subtle on schoolwork. However, with increased frequency and amount, concentration, motivation and memory can be affected. The most recent studies do not necessarily account for crucial, personal differences which greatly affect how alcohol reacts to the body.</p>

<p>If you’re currently drinking more than the guidelines of moderation, you will reduce your risk for problems by cutting back. If you’ve had significant alcohol-related problems and are currently not drinking, trying moderate drinking may put you at risk again for alcohol-related problems. Our goal in this series is to present you with solid empirical data on moderate drinking without blaming, labeling, or telling you what to do. What, if anything you decide to do about your drinking is always up to you.</p>
<h2 id="toc-2">When to avoid alcohol</h2>
<p>To break it down for you further, here’s how both the CDC and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism define a standard drink. This information on drinking in moderation was adapted from materials from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. There are effective treatments for alcohol use disorder.</p>
<p>If you do not drink at all, you eliminate the possibility of incurring any additional adverse consequences (e.g., legal problems, health risks, etc.) caused directly or indirectly by your alcohol use. The founders of AA suggest that attempts at moderation provide the best litmus test for alcoholism. In their view, drinkers that are able to cut back without abstaining are not alcoholics because they haven’t become powerless over alcohol. The personal factors listed above can change the effects of even moderate levels of alcohol use. People with certain diseases, or who are taking over-the-counter or prescription medication should check with their pharmacist or health care provider, as even low levels of alcohol use may cause a reaction.</p>
